Dean Perks is a photographer based in Romford, United Kingdom and focuses his photography on a variety matters within society such as authority and themes surrounding identity; for example, the photographs shown above were part of his project 'Identity Crisis' which consists of images that have a monotone aesthetic which may've been used to convey that the model in each image didn't know their true self yet, conveyed by the black and white photographs, in contrast to beginning to figure out who you are (using unsaturated colour schemes) and then possibly using a vibrant aesthetic to show that the model has discovered their true self.
This photographer photoshoots models who portray an appearance as if their emotions and expressions are silenced, as if they aren't able to show their true emotions or who they truly are, represented by their covered emotions either by a certain pose (shown on the left photograph) or even by a physical 'mask' as shown in the image on the right.
Within Dean Perk's photography, he focuses on drawing attention towards the model's eyes as they are one of the only parts of the photograph that are actually able to show any sense of emotion since other facial features are covered by either other parts of the body, words, or a mask that only reveals the eyes of the model;in addition to this, this photographer tends to digitally manipulate his photographs so that there is a high contrast between light and dark tones in the monotone colour scheme. He focuses on once again emphasising the eyes of the model, increasing the brightness of the eye white and making the iris appear darker in comparison to further exaggerate the silenced emotions hidden behind the eyes or what everyone else is able to physically see and assume of the model's identity, whilst not yet truly knowing who they really are.
Dean Perk's photography technique of focusing on the silenced emotions hidden behind the expressive eyes of the model have informed my photoshoots as I have also intended to focus on the eyes of the model, as well as digitally manipulating some of my photography to help define the darker and lighter tones within these expressive areas to help convey the side of the model that is hidden towards others as being muted.
